Perštejn

Ruins which prove that dishonesty doesn’t pay.

Established most likely after the mid 13th century, the castle used to guard the trade route along the River Ohře as well as the nearby mines producing non-ferrous metals. It was most probably founded by the Lords of Schönburg because their seat, Schönburg (Šumburk) Castle, is located a mere three kilometres away. Since it was a family loyal to Charles IV, they had all their castles including Šumburk granted to them as a fiefdom by the King. However, later in times to come something went wrong. In the 15th century the Schönburgs fell out with the then King George of Poděbrady, who sent an army against them – and Perštejn was captured. The definitive end of the castle came around 1530. The castle was confiscated from its owners as punishment for them making counterfeit money. Seven years later Perštejn is referred to as a ruin. Today you can see traces of a palace, a semi-circle of the original circular tower and remnants of gates and moats.
