Třebíč

In the beginning there was a monastery.

The history of Třebíč starts in 1101, when a Benedictine Monastery was founded here. We have no reliable records suggesting an earlier settlement had existed at this location before. The ancient monks probably sought refuge here from the world to spend their days in prayer and contemplation … But in the end the world found them. In 1277 Třebíč is already referred to as a town and the magnificent St. Procopius Basilica, which has stood up to this day, had been built by that time. The town was successfully developing and following the decision of Margrave Charles town walls were erected in 1335. At that point the first Jews arrived in the town. They were repeatedly expelled from the town and finally by order of the establishment separated from other residents, thanks to which the Jewish Quarter, one of the biggest tourist attractions of the town, was set up. The unique charm of today’s Třebíč is well documented by its inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
