Chateau in Žďár nad Sázavou

Draw strength from the Fountain.

The Gospel says that whosoever drinketh of the water that Jesus shall give him shall never thirst. These words were probably in the mind of the Cistercians, when in 1255 they came into the newly established Monastery - Fons Beatae Mariae Virginis, Fountain of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Undoubtedly, Jesus’ mother is also capable of nourishing souls at prayer. In 1315 the monastery was acquired by Charles’s father John of Luxembourg who treated it really generously – he exempted the monastery from the obligation to pay taxes on its assets held within the immediate vicinity. Charles IV was even more charitable – he extended this exemption to all assets owned by the monastery in Moravia. A change of fortune came a few centuries later. First the monastery received a costly Baroque makeover in the 18th century, but a couple of years later it was gutted by fire and the monks left it. The monastery was turned into a chateau, however the Holy Fountain can still be found there even today.
