Premonstratensian Monastery in Želiv

Some dwelled here willingly, some quite unwillingly.

The monastery’s fate has been full of twists and turns. Established in 1139 by the Benedictines, it soon became inhabited by the Premonstratensians. In 1375 during the reign of Charles IV the monastery burnt down, which was followed up by Gothic reconstruction. However, before that Charles had exempted the monastery’s subjects from the jurisdiction of secular courts and thanks to that the monastery did not have to pay land taxes either. In the 15th century the monastery fell victim to pillaging Hussite troops. And yet one of the local monks, Jan Želivský, had become one of the leading members of the Hussites. The quite peaceful years to follow were disrupted by the Thirty Years' War and then by a major, yet tasteful Baroque adaptation in the 18th century. A hard blow struck in 1950, when under the Communist regime the premises of the dissolved monastery were turned into an internment camp for non-compliant clerics. Since the fall of communism monks have been coming here again of their own volition praising the Lord for freedom.
