Cistercian Monastery at Zlatá Koruna

Thorny history of a monastery with a crown of thorns.

The name of the monastery should evoke awe in you because it refers to Jesus' Crown of Thorns. Its supposed thorn was acquired by the then Czech King Ottokar II of the Přemyslid dynasty, who stored it in the monastery established by himself in 1263. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t just his pious intentions that inspired this holy deed. He was afraid that the rival aristocrats might seize some of his estate. So he decided to entrust it to the monastery. However, the monastery continued to quarrel about the land. It took a small breather under Charles IV, who for example allowed it to hold weekly markets and supported its building development. Unfortunately, everything was thwarted by the wars of the early 15th century... The monastery got back on its feet in the 17th century, when it also received a Baroque makeover. Nonetheless, in the 18th century it was dissolved and very regrettably used for industrial purposes. Fortunately, in the 20th century Zlatá Koruna started shining again. Come to see for yourself and take your hat off!
