Vyšší Brod Monastery

A monastery that Charles IV supported even though it rivalled him.

Memento mori - Remember your own mortality. Probably with this saying in mind, the powerful Rosenbergs built their tomb at the river crossing on an important trade route. In order to stay in close proximity to God forever, they also established a monastery here – and invited Cistercian monks to come and live there. It was in the year of Our Lord 1259. Somewhat out of spite another monastery - Zlatá Koruna - was founded quite close to it, this time under royal patronage. Both monasteries used to have frequent disputes, but Charles IV did not mind. Caring more about a good and holy cause, he exempted the monastery and its subjects from taxes. In addition, he donated to the monastery several relics which he loved collecting. Cistercians have lived in the monastery up to this day. Breathe in the living history – perhaps by visiting a traditional Latin Mass celebrated here according to the Tridentine Rite, which was commonly used by the Roman Catholic Church until the Second Vatican Council.
