Hazmburk Castle

The pearl of Central Bohemian Mountains

The twin-towered silhouette of Hazmburk Castle can be seen for miles in every direction. Made of dark basalt, the Black Tower was an important defensive feature and for some time also served as a prison. The White Tower was named after the light sandstone from which it is made. It is not exactly known who the castle was founded by or even when. The first castle owner was Zbyněk Zajíc Zámořský, who was one of the most loyal friends of Charles IV and held the position of chief royal cup-bearer. He was nicknamed Zámořský (meaning Overseas) most likely due to his visit to the Holy Land. He expanded the castle step by step turning it into a comfortable and respectable residence The old aristocratic castle hides a secret or two - it is believed that beneath it lie underground rooms and secret walled up corridors that used to connect Hazmburk with the castles of Košťálov and Budyně. One of the corridors led to the village of Sedlce below the castle. The castle's most famous legends tell the tale of hidden cellars with barrels of excellent wine, or even of treasure buried in the castle by the French army after Napoleon's defeat in Russia.
