St. Stephen's Church

Visit the church that stole its name from another house of God.

When you get to St. Stephen's Church, take a look around the corner and you will see a Romanesque rotunda. At one point it had been this rotunda that had been consecrated to St. Stephen but after the completion of the new temple the rotunda was dedicated to St. Longin and St. Stephen moved a few metres further away... The construction of the church went very slowly. Building work started in 1351, but it did not end until 1401. So the presbytery was the only part that Charles IV could have seen actually completed. When you enter the church, you will see the typical basilica structure of a nave flanked with side aisles. Let the light from the presbytery, coming in through five high windows, shine on your spirit. The tower of the church proves the concept that plans can be changed on the hoof. Standing in the west on the centreline of the nave, the tower should have been located to the side according to the original plans. A spiral staircase that somewhat “juts out” from the nave wall is a silent reminder of this fact.
