Wenceslas Square

Take a walk through the square where Czech history was made.

Charles IV could never have envisaged how important the Horse Market would be for Czech history one day. Even if it was under the name that it would have to wait for until the mid 19th century. Imagine horse traders, workshops of craftsmen, breweries and even a mill in the bottom part of the market. Then picture wells, where Prague residents would come to get water. All of this was commissioned by Charles IV. And of course, let us not forget defence – in the upper section there used to be the New Town Walls with the Horse Gate. The square played a key role in the modern history of the country. People would come to the Statue of St. Wenceslas, Patron Saint of Bohemia, located on the square, in difficult times throughout history. It was and still is a place of demonstrations, including those that led to the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in 1989.
