A place where weapons clatter and the beer flows like a river.

Before the heat of battle the soldiers would raise a few tankards in a tavern. And after the battle the same again... Weapons and beer – two main Plzeň attributes... Founded in 1295, the royal town of Plzeň was an important trade centre in the period of Charles IV. On top of that in 1363 the King ordered that the town was to become an armoury. So massive solid walls were erected and even today you can admire some of the preserved weaponry in the Museum of West Bohemia – the largest historical armoury in Europe. The story of beer brewing started in the 14th century. All local burghers were bestowed the right to brew and sell beer. Today Plzeň (Pilsen) and beer are perceived as close synonyms. However, let us not forget the spiritual dimension in all of that battling and drinking. Today’s Cathedral of St. Bartholomew was founded in the era of Charles. If you climb up its tower, you will be able to admire the picturesque historical centre all around you.
