Český Krumlov

Visit the town that wanted to outdo Charles IV at his peculiar interest in collecting.

Imagine being a part of a procession and undertaking a pilgrimage to the Monastery Church of the Minorites and Poor Clares and then paying tribute to the masterly crafted reliquary. Emperor and King Charles IV was a passionate collector of relics of saints. The powerful Family of Rosenberg, who owned Český Krumlov, did not want to look second best so they started searching for them too. Charles did not mind this rivalry at all and therefore actually gave them a few relics himself. In a way, Český Krumlov seems to be a town of counterbalancing powers. On one side there is the chateau – a symbol of secular power, and on the other the dominating massive white tower of the Church of St. Vitus – a symbol of ecclesiastical power. Come closer and marvel at the building with a central nave, one flanking aisle on each side and a pentagonal presbytery from the early 14th century. The town is renowned for its historical buildings dating back to the Renaissance period. Thanks to them the town centre is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
