A castle that always appealed to rebels.

Construction of the Náchod Castle in the mid 13th century had an immense strategic importance because it was situated at a pass on the trade route leading from Prague to Klodzko. Charles’s father John of Luxembourg might have had a small chuckle to himself when in 1316 the lords of a local estate revolted against him giving him a good reason to confiscate this important castle from them. Subsequently, he passed it onto a different owner – the loyal Hynek Berka of Dubá and Náchod who even travelled to Pope Clement as Luxembourg’s emissary. And what’s more, the Luxembourgs showed favour to him by inviting him to the wedding of (the future King) Charles IV and Blanche of Valois. Nevertheless, Náchod seemed to attract rebels. The noble family that stood behind the 16th century Renaissance conversion of the castle to a chateau also lost it, due to a rebellion. And that wasn’t the last one … The converted chateau experienced a large building boom during the Baroque Period resulting in the chateau receiving another new facelift. In addition, during this historical era a town hall was erected and the St. Lawrence Church on the main square was rebuilt.
