A town and castle which Charles didn’t lose all love for. And yet he could have... Looking at it, you will be astounded.

Situated on the buttress and towering above the meandering River Ohře, the castle dates back to the second half of the 12th century. Charles could have hated it because at the age of four he had been held prisoner there by his own father John of Luxembourg following a quarrel with his wife – Charles’s mother. The first two months little Charles dwelt in the underground cellar. Some years later John of Luxembourg pledged the castle, but Charles, at that point an adult man, redeemed it and then often came to stay – this time of his own volition. He conferred special privileges on the town under the castle, for example it was exempted from paying taxes. Nonetheless, Charles’s son Sigismund pledged the castle and town yet again and their importance started to wane, particularly after the Thirty Years' War. Despite all of this it has retained a charming character. Visitors can explore various parts of the castle, including the torture chamber located in the castle cellar.
