Litomyšl

A gem among towns. It’s just a pity that the episcopate didn’t last here very long.

Undoubtedly, Litomyšl is one of the most beautiful Czech towns. Its chateau is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The oldest reference about Litomyšl is connected with the year 981, when it used to be a settlement on a trade route. A Premonstratensian Monastery was built in the 12th century at the place where the chateau stands today. The existence of the monastery was taken advantage of by Charles IV in 1344 when he was looking for a location to set up a diocese because after the establishment of the Archdiocese in Prague another diocese was necessary. Litomyšl seemed to be a good choice and the local monastery and its estate were used for its offices. However, the episcopate was short lived as it did not survive the Hussite Religious Wars in the first half of the 15th century. The monastery closed too, but a magnificent Renaissance chateau has stood in its place since the 16th century. Interestingly, the Titular Bishop of Litomyšl has been used to this day.
