Radyně Castle

Would you like to see what a typical castle from the High Middle Ages used to look like? Then pay a visit to Radyně.

The construction of the castle on a forested hill goes hand in hand with the development of Plzeň and the decline of Starý Plzenec. The centre of the region used to be in Starý Plzenec, but then it moved to Plzeň – a fact corroborated by Radyně. Founded by Charles IV in 1356, the castle was to guard the trade route from Prague to Nuremberg. Being a typical High Middle Ages castle – the emphasis was placed on the palace. From the palace it was possible to enter the tower, which was merged with it. Nonetheless, in the 15th century its significance started to wane and after a large fire swept through it, the castle was never rebuilt. On your visit, make sure to watch out for the local ghostly knight. He used to be extremely ugly. One day he kidnapped a beautiful girl and held her in his castle. Once he discovered that their child was very ugly too, he slew both of them. Overwhelmed by remorse, he jumped from the tower to his death and since then his ghost has wandered through the castle.
