Sázava Monastery

Pay a visit to a monastery of an ancient hermit.

The proximity to God and distance from earthly affairs was much sought after by the hermit Procopius and his pupils in the hills above the River Sázava in 1009 and onwards. However, the Prince of Bohemia ordered the construction of a monastery here – and Procopius became its abbot. Old Church Slavonic was used as liturgical language, bringing the disapproval of church officials who permitted Latin only. Therefore, in 1096 Slavonic monks had to run away and the monastery was taken over by Benedictines practising Latin masses. However, a few centuries later it was possible to hear Old Church Slavonic again - Charles IV received permission from the Pope himself. At that time the monastery was extended on a large scale including the monumental church tower. The building boom was interrupted by wars in the early 15th century. The church walls with no arching document the unfulfilled plans. Subsequent building adaptations came during the Baroque era, but in the 18th century the monastery was dissolved once and for all and changed into a chateau.
