Litoměřice

How Charles IV arranged a regular supply of wine for himself.

The history of Litoměřice dates back to the turn of the first millennium, when a chapter was established with the Church of St. Stephen. In the early 13th century Litoměřice became a royal town. Charles IV used to come here quite frequently (provably in 1355, 1359, 1369). After 1350 he commissioned the repair of the Litoměřice Castle and bestowed various privileges upon the town, which due to its location on the confluence of the Rivers Elbe and Ohře has been an import river port since the Middle Ages. Charles IV referred to the local castle as “his own house”. Obviously, he had warm feelings towards it – he had enlarged it and the town on a grand scale. Having his taste buds in mind, he had vineyards established here provided that one ninth of the produced wine would belong to the King. In times to come the local burghers leaned towards reformation, so in the 17th century the Catholic Church set up a diocese here as if “to spite them” and to eliminate local protestant tendencies. In the 19th century the importance of Litoměřice started to decline partially due to the non-existence of major industry. However, thanks to this fact Litoměřice has at least held on to its long-lived charm.
