On the path of the kings

Length 3 km Duration 1 Day

The itinerary involves walking in combination with travelling on public transport.

Follow the route that was taken by Charles IV on his way to coronation in the St. Vitus Cathedral of the Prague Castle.

Start your tour of Prague on the Old Town Square. Take good look at the Old Town Hall with its tower, which is a scene for the hourly performance of the Astronomical Clock. Stop in front of the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Stone Bell House, once the home of Charles IV’s parents John of Luxembourg and Elizabeth of Bohemia. Visit one of the restaurants and take in the atmosphere of the heart of the city from an outside seating. Through a network of jumbled alleys, you will get to the Charles Bridge. Pass its rows of majestic statues and the ever-present street artists and cross it to the left riverbank. Turn left before the Lesser Town Bridge Tower and then, at the end of Míšeňská street, turn right again. Pass under the bridge to the Kampa Island, which is separated from the Lesser Town by a millstream called Čertovka. Then walk over a small bridge and through a series of winding alleys to the Lesser Town Square. Stop for a while and relish the beauty of the Church of St. Nicholas. Then, finally, climb the Old Castle Steps to the Prague Castle. At midday you can watch the changing of the castle guards on the 1st Courtyard. Changing at the individual guard posts takes place every hour. Cross the 2nd Courtyard and go to the St. Vitus cathedral. If you accept the challenge of the 287 stairs of the Great Southern Tower, you will be rewarded by a breathtaking view of the castle and entire Prague below. Jiřská Street will take you to the picturesque Golden Lane and the Black Tower. Exit through the gate and walk down the Old Castle Steps to the tram stop Malostranská. The tram will then take you to Ostrčilovo Square. From there it is only a short walk to the famous Vyšehrad, steeped in so many legends. There is also a cemetery and a lookout, from where you can watch the sun set above the Vltava.

During your tour take the opportunity of a sunny afternoon, borrow a rowboat, a pedalo, a motorboat or a swan boat and go out on a river cruise. You will have a chance to watch Prague’s life from a different perspective – from the surface of the Vltava, which reflects the towers of Prague’s churches, the Charles Bridge or the skyline of Hradčany and it is regularly rippled by steamboats full of tourists.
